Hemis Monastery

Hemis Monastery or Hemis Gompa, constructed in 1630 during the period of Sengge Namgyal, is the world known biggest Buddhist Monastery in the region of Leh. The Monastery is managed by Drukpa sect of Buddhism and the Gompa flourished by the activities during the period of Namgyal dynasty.

The monastery consists of two portions, the main temple known as Tshogkhang and an assembly hall, known as Dukhang. The verandahs of the Gompa are adorned with many beautiful wall paintings. These paintings display the Kalachakra, the wheel of life and the 'Lords of the Four Quarters’. It has many treasures on display including an lovely idol of Buddha (Sakyamuni).

Hemis Chheshu, the birthday celebrations of Guru Padmasambhav generally falls on late June or early July, is a major draw. The Ritual rolling of the Monastery’s worthy possession, a giant tangka is hosted by Hemis festival once in every 12 years. This is an ancient cultural celebration and is attended by Buddhists from all over the world.
