Situated around 52 km west of Leh, Likir Monastery is one of the best maintained monasteries in Ladakh. This magnificent monastery stands on a small hillock in the valley, about 10 km from Saspol village near Indus River. Under the supervision of Lhachen Gyalpo, the fifth king of Ladakh, Lama Duwang Chosje founded this monastery in 1065. The monastery is known for housing a 23 m high gilded gold statue of Maitreya Buddha.

The monastery has two assembly halls, containing statues of Bodhisattva, Amitabha, Sakyamuni Maitreya and Tsong Khapa, founder of the yellow-hat sect. Home to more than 120 Buddhist monks, the monastery is also a treasury of ancient manuscripts, with a collection of thanka, old costumes and earthen pots. Besides, the annual event of Dosmochey is organized here on the 27th day to 29th day of the month of the Tibetan calendar.
