The district of Kolar is situated in the state of Karnataka. It is located about 68 kilometers from Bangalore. The capital of the district is Kollara which is famous for its gold mining. Kolar is famous for its history. The old city had a fort surrounding the city, however over time most of the fort has been eroded and only little remains today. The district of Kolar is famous for its gold mines and its temples. The famous Kolar gold mine is one of the few gold mining sites in India.
The city is famous for its holy monuments which include the old temples, mosques and churches built during the rule of the British. The major temples are Kolaramma temple and the Someswara temple.
The Someswara temple was built during the famous Vijayanagar period and the inscriptions can be still seen today. They date to the 15th century. The inscriptions on the temples are fine examples of Vijayanagara art. The Kolaramma temple was built in the Ganga tradition in the 11th century. The Shahi Masjid and Eidgah Masjid were built in the year 1729. The temple consists of several Chola inscriptions. The earliest are from the 11th century.
