Kerala is one of the most beautiful states in India, located on the Malabar Coast in the South Western portion of the country. It was declared as a state on 1st November 1956 and is bordered by Tamil Nadu in the South and South-East, Karnataka in the North and North-East and by the Arabian Sea in the West.

Kerala is also famous for being the state with the highest literacy rate and is the least corrupt state in India. Kerala is popularly known by its sobriquet - ‘God’s Own Country’.

Destinations to Look Out For

The busy and always bustling city of Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of Kerala, while cosmopolitan cities like Kozhikode and Kochi are well connected to every part of the country. Kochi is a place of historical significance and has always been an active port town throughout.

Kerala, with its exotic charm, beauty and unique culture, rose as a popular tourist destination only in the early 1980s, after aggressive promotions by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation.

The most popular tourist attractions in Kerala are the backwaters, its Ayurvedic hubs, aromatic spice gardens, delightful hill stations, enchanting wildlife and the virgin beaches that draw people in huge numbers to the state.

Kovalam, Cherai, and Bekal are the most popular beaches in Kerala and famous hill stations that you can visit include Wayanad, Ponmudi and Munnar. You can take a houseboat ride in the calm backwaters of the Punnamuda or Alleppey. Wildlife enthusiasts will love the state thanks to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary that it houses.

Tourists coming to Kerala need to ensure that they have an advance booking, as obtaining accommodation in a five star hotel or houseboat might be difficult. The state remains a tourist hotspot throughout the year.
