Karnataka is a state in South Western India and was declared so on the 1st of November 1956. The state is bordered by Goa to the northwest, Arabian Sea to the west, Maharashtra to the north, Tamil Nadu as well as Kerala to the southeast and southwest respectively and Andhra Pradesh towards the east.

The two main river systems in the state are the Krishna and the Cauvery which flow east and fall into the Bay of Bengal. The state is divided in three geographical zones, the coastal region of Karavali, the Western Ghats and Deccan plateau.

Destinations to Look Out For

Karnataka plays host to scores of tourists coming in from all over the world. The Western Ghats present in the state witness many tourists and trekking enthusiasts. The famous eco tourism destinations in the Western Ghats are Kudremukh, Agumbe and Madikeri, which provide a mesmerizing view and have many streams and waterfalls flowing through them.

There are five national parks and twenty five wildlife sanctuaries present in Karnataka. You can visit the popular parks here that are the Nagarhole National Park, Bannerghatta National Park and Bandipur National park. The Vijayanagara Empire at Hampi and the rock caves at Badami are breathtaking sites where you can delve into the history of the region.

Don’t miss a visit to the 14th century temples at Belur and Halebidu that are exquisite works of architecture carried out by the Hoysala dynasty. The Gol Gumbaz is a standing example of the Deccan Sultanate architecture. The monolith of Bahubali at Shravanabelagola is the tallest of its kind in the world and this is a major destination for Jains.

Waterfalls in Karnataka are many, and these provide a visual treat to tourists. Jog Falls is the tallest waterfall in India and the other popular waterfalls are Abbey Falls, Magod Falls, and Shivanasamudra Falls. The beaches scattered throughout the state’s coastline include Gokarna, Murudeshwara and Karwar. These places are known for their different culture and cuisine.

Ancient temples such as the Kukke Subramanya temple, Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt, Manjunatha temple at Dharmasthala can be found here. The sites at Karakala, Mudabidri and Shravanabelagola are some Jain monuments and hold enormous importance in Jainism.
