Karaikudi
(Karaikudi is also spelled as Karaikkudi)
|
Karaikudi is the biggest city in the Sivaganga district located in the state of Tamil Nadu in the southern portion of India. An Indian magazine has listed this fine city as one of the five fastest growing vacation spots for tourists. Tourists like to visit this area for the old historic buildings that are there, the excellent shopping, and the outstanding local cuisine. Historically, this city played a major role in the momentous India freedom struggle.
Karaikudi is traditionally part of the ancestral home of the Chettiyars. The Nattukottai Chettiyars was a prosperous banking community that was successful in overseas business in South and Southeast Asia during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is the members of this business community that built and then lived in many, but not all, of the historical buildings in the area. There are also several famous temples in the region as well that had nothing to do with the Chettiyars. Karaikudi is the largest of a total of 75 villages that are located in close proximity of each other and make up the entire homeland of the Nattukottai Chettiyars. This happening city has become a popular shooting spots for film makers in both the Tamil and the Telugu film industries. The film influence can be seen in the existence of the numerous theaters that can be found throughout the city. Its progressive ways are also seen in the great modern railways and roadways that were already established as far back as 1930. CommentsWas this Karaikudi tourism information helpful?
