Devi Kany Kumari temple in Kanyakumari is also known as Bhagvathy temple, Kanya Devi or Shree Bala temple. Dedicated to Devi Kanya Kumari, an affiliate of Lord Durga, the temple is believed to have been consecrated by Sage Parashurama. The temple is considered one among the 51 shaktipeeth and some of the major festivals celebrated here are – Chaitry Pournima festival in May, Navrathri festival in Sep-Oct, Vaisakha festival in May-June and Kalabham festival in July-August. The rituals in the temple are performed in a typical Kerala way where the shrine is opened in the western door. The eastern door is opened only on certain occasions during the year.
