Jharkhand is a state located in the eastern portion of the country. Ranchi is its capital city and the language spoken is Jharkhandi. The total area covered by the state id 74,680 sq. kilometers. It is bordered by Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Paschim Banga. Some of the major industrial cities in Jharkhand are Bokaro, Hazaribagh and Dhanbad.

The word “Jharkhand” literally means “the land of forests”. Jharkhand was a part of Bihar, before becoming an independent state in the year 2000; though some writers state that there was a distinct cultural and ethnic entity named Jharkhand even before the existence of Magadha Empire. The state was known as Kukara during the Mughal rule.

Jharkhand has a majorly tribal population who, during the British Raj, played a pivotal role in helping India gain its freedom.

Destinations to Visit

Jharkhand is abundant with natural resources and flora and fauna occupy much of its panorama. The Betla National Park, which is located in the Latehar district and covers an area of around 250 sq. kilometers, is full of bison, tigers, sambhar, elephants, pythons, wild boars, foxes, rabbits, deer and monkeys. The national park also has lesser mammals such as hares, honey badgers, porcupines, wild cats, mongooses, Malabar giant squirrels, antelopes, and wolves.

The Palamu Tiger Reserve comes under Project Tiger and is home to a number of varieties of flora and fauna. A number of species such as snakes, mammals, lizards, insects, fish, birds, herbs and trees can be found in the place. The Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary is a very scenic place with a range of flora and fauna.

Some sacred places in the state include Deoghar, Rarappa, Sitagarha Hill and Parasnath Hills. Madhupur and Ghatsila are famous for their climate and soothing vicinity. The Sitagarha Hills in the Marwateri Basin has a very famous Buddhist shrine.

Some very famous festivals that are celebrated with pomp in the state are Kali Puja, Durga Puja, Jitia Puja, Karma Puja and Sahrul. The Poush Mela and the Tusu Fair are also very popular in the state. The Baidnath Temple and Hundru Falls are some more famous tourist destinations of Jharkhand.

How to Reach

By Air

A domestic air terminal is located in Ranchi and has flights to Delhi, Patna, Kolkata and Mumbai. International tourists can avail flights from major places in US, Europe, South East Asia and Middle East Asia to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

By Trains

Ranchi railway station is well connected to all the cities in India and is a preferred means of travel for Indian tourists. Other major railway stations in the state are Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Girdih and Bokaro.

By Road

You can reach Ranchi by buses which are generally privately owned from states like Orissa, Chattisgarh, Paschim Banga and Bihar. Tourists prefer travelling in buses within the state; cities like Dumka, Girdih, Bokaro, Jamshedpur and Ranchi are very well connected via buses and taxis.
