A city whose name is synonymous with a great woman ruler of medieval India, Jhansi in the state of Uttar Pradesh boast of a rich history. Formerly known as Shankargarh, Jhansi got its name from the term jhain-si which means blurred shadow. A mere rendering of the term Jhansi is enough to evoke the patriotic spirit of every Indian. It was the might and valor of Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi paved way for the first war of Indian Independence.

A land that gave birth to so many illustrious rulers had acquired significance under the rule of Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha. After him the city had been governed by so many rulers and finally it came under the rule of Raja Gangadhar Rao whose efficient administration marked by an all round development. True history of Jhansi began when Raja Gangadhar Rao married Lakshmi Bahi. After the sudden demise of her husband, Lakshmi Bahi fought courageously with all her enemies’ especially against the British.

Situated in the midst of Betwa and Pahunj rivers, Jhansi serves as a glorified gateway to Bundelkhand. Apart from the scenic surroundings and lovely locations of a typical tourist place, Jhansi allures the picnicker with its wide range of ancient monuments and colossal bastions, which bears a true testimonial to the artistic caliber and skill of the Chandela kings of Bundelkhand.

While preserving the magnificent reminders of the past with great care, Jhansi has made a successful move in to thriving city with lots of industrial and manufacturing units. Today’s Jhansi presents a bustling appeal, as it happens to be the passage of the East-West Corridor, and the North-South Corridor connecting Kashmir and Kanyakumari.

With its historical edifices and architectural marvels, Jhansi provides a unique and exciting holidaying to the visitors and it is a recommended place for those who wants to get a deep insight about the true history of a great city.
