Jammu and Kashmir is a state in India located in its northern region. Srinagar and Jammu are the summer and winter capitals of the state respectively. The languages spoken in the state are Urdu, Ladakhi and Dogri. The state is bordered by the states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and also shares its international borders with China, Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan.

The state is divided into three sections, namely Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir Valley. Kashmir provides tourists with breathtaking views and is a very scenic place. The Jammu region is dotted with famous shrines and pilgrimage sites. Ladakh is popularly known as Little Tibet because of its uncanny resemblance to the region.

Destinations to Visit

Jammu and Kashmir provides a never like before experience to tourists, trek enthusiasts and bikers. The snow capped mountains adorn the skies of the state. A visit to the state leaves you mesmerized in the natural beauty of the state.

You can visit the famous Dal Lake, which is also called “Srinagar’s jewel” or “Jewel in the crown of Kashmir”. The lake has a shore line of 15.5 kilometers. Shikaras can be hired in the lake. The prominent cities in the state are Leh, Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Jammu, Patnitop, Katra, Zab Baihk, Udhampur and Srinagar.

Patnitop and Pahalgam are popular trekking sites in the state and are visited by a huge number of trek enthusiasts. Gulmarg is home to the World’s highest gondola. You can go skiing here. The Amarnath Yatra starts at Pahalgam. Patnitop is a hill station in Jammu. Gulmarg is rich in natural beauty and is considered as one of the best tourist destinations in the world. It also has a golf course.

The Snow Mountains form the background of Sonamarg; it is a breath taking view. Raghunath Temple is home to Lord Shri Rama. The salagrams, which are considered to be holy according to Hindu beliefs, are found here.

Don’t miss a visit to the Mubarak Mandi Palace that is an amalgamation of three different architectural styles, Mughal, Gothic and Rajasthani. The Dogra Art museum and the Sheesh Mahal are located in the palace. Bahu fort is another architectural delight.

The Chadar trek or the frozen river trek is one of the best trekking spots in India. The region has a difficult geographical terrain and it is a challenge for the adventurers.

How to Reach

By Air

The Jammu Airport has flights to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, and many more. The nearest international airport to the state is the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi which is connected to the Middle East Asia, South East Asia, Europe, US and China.

By Trains

The Jammu railway station is well connected to rest of the major Indian cities. The Jammu Tawi railway station is mostly used by tourists to reach Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Pune. The railway station is located 305 kilometers from Srinagar.

By Road

Tourists can reach Jammu via the National Highway 1A to all the states of India. The roads are extremely well maintained; cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Katra and Amritsar lie 586, 436, 48 and 243 kilometers from Jammu respectively.
