The history of Jaisalmer can be traced back to the year 1156, when the city was founded by Rawal Jaisal, after whom the city was named. Before that the Bhatta Rajputs were the rulers of the city. In the year 1239, Emperor Alauddin Khilji attacked and ravaged the fort as well as the city.

Travel within city

The Golden City which is situated in the heart of the desert is connected to the other parts of the state by road and rail. The nearest airport at Jaisalmer has a few scheduled flights, however this is a military base and only limited flights are available. There is a direct rain service from Delhi and the railway station has auto stands outside. There are also private taxis that are available from the airport and station. They charge between Rs 200 to 400 to any parts in the city. The entire city can be traveled on foot from one end to the other. The walled part of the city has gates and travelers can use many modes of transport from these gates.

Auto Rickshaw

Jaisalmer has many autos that can be found in most places. They are not metered and prices are usually negotiable. Since it is a relatively small city and the autos are cheap. There are no separate night fares.

Camel Ride

Another option to travel to the nearby areas is by camel. However these need to be booked in advance. Camel safaris are also available from Bikaner.


There are bus services that connect most parts of the city and these are very cheap. They are relatively frequent. Buses may be old and may not be comfortable. They cost around Rs 5 to 15.
