According to the available historical records, the city was founded by Rao Nandlal Choudhary who was a Zamindar. The present day name ‘Indore’ came into being after the Zamindar was convinced the city to be safe from all sides and established his center there thus, giving it the name Indrapur.
The Marathas gained control over Indore but they lost the battle against the Afghan invader Ahmad Shah Abdali. However, his reign did not last long and they had to surrender to the British for peace. The British handed over the control of the city to the rulers of the Holkar dynasty, under the leadership of Maharaja Malhar Rao Holkar.
The city remained under the rule of the Holkar kings during the rule of the British in India. Soon after independence, Indore along with various other cities was integrated to form the Madhya Bharat. However, on November 1st 1956, the government of India declared the city to be part of the present day Madhya Pradesh.
