The town of Hirakud is located in the Indian state of Orissa. This town is a major tourist destination in the state and is located in the Sambalpur district. The town is located at a distance of around fifteen kilometers from the district headquarters – Sambalpur. One of the developing places in the state, Hirakud is famous for a major dam that was built here during the year 1956. This dam, also called as the Hirakud Dam, can be visited by interested tourists.

You can also visit many temples in the town of Hirakud that are quite famous among pilgrims. The Budharaja temple located in this town is a very popular destination that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is located in a very scenic setting as well, atop the famous Budharaja hill, which is located near Hirakud Dam.

Another major temple that you must visit during your trip to Hirakud is the Ghanteswari Temple, also known as the bell temple. The temple once served as a dual purpose lighthouse too, and the many bells in this temple were used as alarms to warn incoming ships. The Leaning Temple, or Huma Temple, is also a very famous destination in Hirakud, and this was built during the 17th century and dedicated to Lord Shiva.
