The honeymoon destinations in Himachal Pradesh are famous all over the world and can be conveniently reached by any part of the country.

There are three air bases - Jubbarati airport at Shimla, Guggal airport near Dharamsala and Bhuntar airport near Kullu, that connect Himachal Pradesh to the rest of the country.


Shimla is the most popular hill station in India, thus can be easily visited from all over the world. Located at a distance of 360 kms from Delhi, Shimla has its own airport called Jubbarati airport, located 23 kms from the city center. Railways too connect Shimla to the rest of the country. Well maintained roads can also be taken to reach Shimla. Approximate travel time through road is around 6-7 hours from Delhi.

HPTDC buses are available from Delhi and charge Rs 440 per head for a 10 hour long journey. Taxis can be hired from the airport at Rs 520 to reach Shimla. In Shimla, walking was the only option till the two-part lift connecting the east end of the Mall with Cart road was started (when). They charge Rs 7 per head and operate between 8am till 10pm. Taxis can be hired from the station for the lift at Rs 60.

Manali and Kullu

Manali is one of the most visited city in the country and is well connected by various means of transport. The nearest airport is at Bhuntar (50 kms from manali). From here tourists can take taxis for the city that cost around Rs 900.

HPTDC and private buses too ply from various nearby cities like Shimla, Dharamsala, Dehradun, Jammu and Jaipur. Alternatively buses are also available from Manali to the other cities in the state as well as nearby states.

Local travel in the city comprise only auto rickshaws and motor cycles. From the main city, autos for Old Manali and Vashisht cost Rs 50. The Hadimba Auto Rickshaw Booking office, located on the Mall road is the place to get your autos from. If your more adventurous then bikes can be rented from the Enfield Club (01902-251094). The going rate for hiring a bike is Rs 450 for a day for 500cc Enfield and Rs 350 to 300 for a 100cc Enfield or 150cc Yamaha or Bajaj. Other reliable places to rent bikes are Life Adventure tours on Model Town road and Himalayan Inder Motors on Gompa road.

McLeodganj and Dharamsala

McLeodgang and Dharamsala are just a stone’s throw away from each other and tourists can conveniently reach these destinations from any part of the state or country. From Shimla, one can reach Dharamsala and McLeodganj by taxis (Rs 3,200) and bus (Rs 190 for 10 hour journey).

The nearest airport is at Gaggal, 15 km southwest of Dharamsala. Taxis cost around Rs 350 to take the tourists from Gaggal to McLeodganj.

Buses and taxis also are available from McLeodgang to Dharamshala. Bus charge Rs 7 per head and run till 7pm. Shared taxis at Rs 7 per head are also available. Tourists can also book a taxi for a full day at a cost of Rs 800 per day.

Local transport in McLeodganj includes auto rickshaws. The auto rickshaw stand is located just north of the bus stand and charge nominally. Some of the places where you can go by auto rickshaw is to Bhagsu (Rs20), Tsuglagkhang (Rs 20), Tibetan Children’s Village (Rs 40) and Gangchen Kyishong (Rs 80). Taxis stand is at Mall road and if tourists book a taxi for less than 80 kms, the charge is Rs 1,000 flat.

Chail, Naldehra and Kufri

These are small yet scenic destinations in Himachal that are well connected by major towns and cities of the state. For Chail, Naldehra and Kufri, Jubbarati is the nearest airport and Kalka is the nearest broad gauge railway station.

Chail is 65 kms south of Shimla and can be reached via buses or taxis from Shimla. Taxis charge around Rs 1000 for a one-way trip to Chail. Buses charging Rs 200 per person also play regularly from Shimla to Chail.

Naldehra is just 22 kms from Shimla and is well connected. Taxis can be taken from Shimla and they cost Rs 520 for a one way trip. Buses too are available and cost Rs 24 per head.

For Kufri, which is 16 kms from Shimla, buses and taxis can be availed. Buses charge Rs 12 per head for a one way ride to Kufri from Shimla. Taxis on the other hand can charge around Rs 500 for a round trip from Shimla.

Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Chamba

For these destinations, the nearest airport is Guggal and Pathankot is the nearest rail head. The distance of airport and railway station from Dalhousie is 170 kms and 85 kms respectively.

To reach Dalhousie tourists can take a a taxi that will charge approximately Rs 1000 for a drop. Alternatively buses too can be taken from Pathankot costing Rs 50 and takes about 2 hours. From the airport the taxi fare is around 1500 for one way. Buses can also be taken from near the airport and cost Rs 90 for a 6 hours journey. From Shimla, which is 335 kms away, buses (Rs 270 for 12 hrs journey) are available from Dalhousie.

Khajjiar is 22 kms from Dalhousie and is easily reachable. Taxis charge Rs 560 and buses cost Rs 16 and takes around one hour. Khajjiar is around 455 km from Shimla and buses charge around Rs 300 and takes about 13 hours.

For Chamba, tourists can take buses from Dharamshala. The nearest airport town is at Guggal and from here buses take Rs 140 per head for an 8-hour long journey. Taxis are also available the airport and charge Rs 1,500 approximately for a drop. Shimla and Chamba are 399 km apart and from Shimla, tourists can take buses that take 14 hours to reach the city and tickets cost Rs 300 per head.

Lahaul and Spiti

Lahaul and Spiti are a world in their own and in order to reach them, Bhuntar airport in Kullu is the nearest option. Jogindernagar is the nearest narrow gauge rail head to Lahaul & Spiti while Chandigarh is the broad gauge rail head.

To reach Keylong from Manali, buses can be taken by paying Rs 87 per head for the 6 hour long journey. Taxis too are available and charge Rs 2000 for a round trip. Buses to Kaza are available from Manali at Rs 152 per head and takes abut 10 hours to compete the one-way journey. Taxis too can be taken from Manali and they charge Rs 4,500.
