Located 40 km southeast of Leh on the banks of Indus is the famous Hemis National Park, also known as Hemis High Altitude National Park. Named after the well known Buddhist Gompa (Hemis Monastery), the park is situated an altitudinal range of 3,300 to 6,000 m and covers an area of 600 sq. km.
The park is home to snow leopard, one of the endangered mammals while one can also spot varieties of animals including wolves, marmots, red foxes, ibexes, macaques, langurs, urials and deers. Rich in flora and fauna, it is an ideal place for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. The park remains opens throughout the year but the best time to visit is during May to October.
