Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, located just 15 km from Hampi was established in the year 1994. This sanctuary in the eastern plains of Karnataka is home to the endangered Sloth Bears. When the Karnataka Govt. declared Bilikallu reserve forest as Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary in October 1994, the forest had nothing but thorny trees and barren stony hillocks. However, with the help of the surrounding villagers and the staff’s efforts, the sanctuary has turned into a lush green area, making it suitable habitat for Sloth Bears and other wildlife.
The sanctuary boasts of having an estimate of about 120 Sloth Bears, with a wide range of wildlife such as Leopards, Hyena, Wild Boars, Monitor Lizard, Jackals, Porcupine, Mongoose, Partridges etc. Besides, the sanctuary also houses about 90 species of birds and a variety of more than 27 species of butterflies.
It will be a good idea to wear dark colored clothes while visiting the sanctuary and make sure you carry binoculars. The best time for visiting the sanctuary is from August to April.
