The main attraction in Belur, known as Velapuri during Hoysala period, is the Chennakesava temple complex, which contains the Chennakesava (Lord Vishnu) as the central deity, surrounded by the Kappe Chennigraya temple constructed by Shantaladevi, queen of famous king Vishnuvardhan.
Belur, capital during Hoysala kingdom for a short duration, was constructed to mark the victory of the king Vishnuvardhana of Talkad against Cholas. The Channakeshava temple is one of the finest structures using soft soapstone during Hoysala period and presently is one of the famous tourist destinations in India. As per saying, the beauty of this temple is inside as there are 48 pillars carved in different designs. There are a number of foreigners thronging the place.
