Halebid, literally meaning a ruined city, is a small town with several large tanks, highlighting its glorious past. Halebid, the great city of Dwarasamudra flourished as a capital of the Hoysala Empire during the 12th and 13th centuries, during which period it reached its greatness. The Delhi Sultanate’s armies sacked Halebid in 1311 and 1327; the good high profile city was ruined during this invasion.

Halebid has several strikingly beautiful Hoysala temples and Jain shrines. These temples are sculptural extravaganza, richly endowed with most finely detailed scroll work in stone. One can see a hillock where the Palace stood, a sight having archaeological value and beauty.

Halebid is the abode of lots of tourist attractions including Hoysaleswara temple, Basadi Halli, Belur, Shantaleswara Temple and Kedareswara Temple. Halebid is a good place to visit, especially as it stands as a symbol of the nation’s culture with the pride of past glory. Archaeological Society of India preserves the ancient temples, with all decorum and neatness. The Archaeological Museum situated in Halebid has a good collection of ancient sculptures. This museum is open daily except Friday between 10 am to 5 pm.

Halebid has on its account a 12th century Jain Bastis, which consists of three temples. There are some famous temples with spectacular history and view, twelve columns support the Parswanathasmi Temple, the nearby Kedareswar Temple supposed to be built in 1221 AD and houses a Sivalinga named after Lord Siva who is worshiped at Kedarnath. Apart from traditional Hindus, Non-Hindus are also permitted to enter the temples. There are a dozen or so other smaller temples in this area.
