Gaumukh refers to the cow’s face; Gau is synonymous to Cow and Mukh means face. Gaumukh is the name given to the glacier which happens to be the origin of the flow of the river Ganga. It is from this glacier that Ganga transformed herself into a river and trickled down as river Bhagirathi.
One has to travel a distance of 18 kms from Gangotri towards an altitude of 4200 mts to reach the Gaumukh. The glacier is a must-see spot for pilgrims and religious individuals as a dip in the ice-cold waters of Ganga is supposed to be very sacred and holy. This holy dip is supposed to wash away all your sins and give you a new lease of life.
