Durgapur, literally means home of Goddess Durga, is a major rice-trading center and an industrial town situated along the banks of Damodar River in West Bengal, India. The topography is highly uneven. There are many industries in the township, making the city very rich and knitting its modern facilities and culture. The well planned out Industrial Township was designed by Joseph Allen Stein and Benjamin Polk. Presently Durgapur attracts lots of tourists and turning out to be quite a hangout place for youngsters, who look for western trends, modern cuisine and entertainment.
Tourists who look for shopping Benachity is an ideal place, resembles an olden city having shops all along, an area for shopping with its quaintest presents of charming small merchant setups. The city has established itself with big shopping malls, arcades, cine halls and host of eateries. Places of tourist interest include the Durgapur Barrage, Kumarmangalam Park, and Troika Park for kids. Adorned with many temples and mosques the city celebrates Durgapuja, Kalipuja, Rath jatra, Id and Muharram with much vigor and color. The biggest gym of Durgapur Mantra is one of the places which one should visit to know the real fun of life to see the exquisite fitness station. Travel within cityDurgapur railway station is also well connected to the major cities in the country and travelers who are arriving at the railway station can hire one of the numerous auto rickshaws that are available at the rail station. They may not run on meter and the prices are usually negotiable. Some of the best ways to travel around the city are through auto rickshaws, CNG autos, cycle rickshaws and mini buses. Auto Rickshaw/CNG Auto RickshawAuto rickshaws are easy to find and they are usually available at all parts of the city. CNG auto rickshaws are pollution free autos that are available from the city center. They are also a good option. Autos generally have special night fare and one has to be prepared for a long negotiation with the drivers during the night. Mini BusMini buses are cheap and are found in all parts of the city. These are a good option for short distance transport and ticket prices vary according to the distance. Cycle RickshawCycle Rickshaws are available in selected places and they are a good option for short distances. Prices have to be negotiated and this may take a while. i am worried about the change i find in the town since the last 3-4 years. new kids (many from outside the town here for studying) & other people are changing the culture there. i find young couples at big bazaar talking in english, & telling their kids to "come here" & "sit there". how funny & how alarming !! we who have been born & brought up in durgapur ...more

I was brought up in durgapur . i lived there from 1993-1999.its a wonderful and well planned and well designed city...i love it but i left it in 1999 and shifted to siliguri.. i used to study in st.michael's school durgapur. i miss it a lot and miss the city
