Best Season / Best time to visit Dharamsala

Dharmasala has a cool climate all through the year but the best season to visit Dharmasala is from mid-September to June.
  • Winter (December to February) is chilly and freezing. During January the mercury dips below -1 °C. Snowfalls in winters (especially January) are ideal for enjoying honeymoon but extra care needs to be taken.
  • Summer (March to June) is warm with temperatures between 22 °C to 38 °C. Trekking enthusiasts prefer this season.
  • Monsoons (July to mid September) with heavy rainfalls can be messy. The months of July and August witness heavy and are avoided by tourists. From the mid of September, rainfall stops.
  • Autumn (mid-September to November) is beautiful and is ideal for sightseeing and adventure activities.
While winters is ideal for spotting snow capped hilly areas, summer is best for all kinds of tourist activities including trekking in the hilly terrains. The months from September to November are ideal for sight seeing, temple visits, outings and trekking. July to August are not the best time as heavy rainfall can causes road blocks.

Weather: Very Hot
Weather starts to get pleasant with warm days and cool nights. The temperatures starts to pick up but cool winds maintain don't allow the heat to get too strong. Ideal for holidaying especially for people living in other parts of North India. Snow can be enjoyed only on higher slopes.

January can be a good time for enjoying honeymoon as the area receives heavy snowfall and heavy woolens are a must. Extra care requires to be taken for travelers who are being accompanied by children or old people.

Very Cold
Very cold but temperature starts to go up at the end of the month. Snowfall occur during this month but it will stop snowing by the middle of the month. The place is crowded by honeymooners.
Mar
Moderately Cold
Temperature starts to rise making it more comfortable for travel. Skies start to clear and sometimes cold winds might give you a shudder. Light woolens are required during the evenings. March kick starts the tourist season in Dharamsala. Snowfall has completely stopped but snow can be found on the ground.

Moderately Hot
The month is dominated by clear skies and cool breeze making it a good time for adventures. Temperature starts to soar making the weather comfortable. Best time for sightseeing, trekking, camping and a lot of other adventure activities. Snow can be enjoyed only on higher altitudes.

Very Hot
Weather starts to get pleasant with warm days and cool nights. The temperatures starts to pick up but cool winds maintain don't allow the heat to get too strong. Ideal for holidaying especially for people living in other parts of North India. Snow can be enjoyed only on higher slopes.

Moderately Hot
The days are warm but evenings get pleasant. Rain starts to drizzle a bit, but not enough to bring a halt to your trip and is at a less annoying level. Ideal time for sightseeing and adventures. For tourists wanting to enjoy snow need to travel to very high altitude.

Pleasant
Occasional rainfall brings the temperature down but makes it difficult for enjoying adventure as roads can get slippery. Enjoying snow on plains is not possible, however there will be snow on higher altitudes.

Rainy
Rain lashes the ground, cooling the temperature. The area experience unexpected landslides and chances of indulging in adventure looks bleak. The regular rainfall can be of inconvenience but the natural greenery is at is best. Snow can be found on very high altitudes, but it might be difficult to reach those spots.

Pleasant
The weather is marked by cool days and cold night. Ideal for sightseeing and trekking expeditions. After a brief halt during the monsoons, the city gears itself again for the tourism season which begins from the mid of the month. Tourists interested in enjoying snow should go to higher altitude.

Pleasant
October is the best time for children and adults alike as the days are pleasant and nights get a little chilly. Adventure too can be enjoyed. Light woolens are recommended. October is the best season to visit Dharamsala as the city is at its beautiful best during this time. For snow, tourists should go further higher to the mountains.

Moderately Cold
The climate gets colder as the mercury starts dipping. Clear skies and cool winds maintain the chill in the air. This is an ideal month for enjoying the tourist attractions and various adventure sports as well. Slopes are covered with snow and tourists need to go higher into the mountains to enjoy the snow.

Very Cold
The month of December marks the beginning of the cold waves. Fresh snowfall occurs during the end of the month and invites honeymooners from all over. The time is also good for indulging in some winter sports but if you are travelling with children or being accompanied by old people then you need to practice extra caution.
