Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid, was constructed in the early half of the 12th century by Qutub-ud-Din Aibak. The mosque is situated in Mehrauli and was originally commenced as a mark of Qutub Aibak’s triumph over Rai Pithora. The mosque has been exquisitely built with a rectangular court in the centre, surrounded by covered passages. These passages were erected with engraved columns and other architectural works after demolishing the temples standing in that area.
The dimensions of the mosque were later increased in 1230 by extending the arcade and prayer hall. A skillfully engraved stone screen with arabesque adornments and inscriptions from the Quran was erected in front of the prayer hall. This beautiful mosque is a must visit for every visitor.
