Daman and Diu is an Indian Union Territory located on the Arabian Sea. It was a part of Portuguese India until the 19th of December 1961. Earlier Goa, Daman and Diu were considered to be a single Union Territory before Goa was declared as a separate state in 1987. The city is enveloped by the state of Gujarat.

The languages popularly spoken in the place are Gujarati, Marathi and English. Portuguese is spoken by some old timers, but is becoming a fast declining language. Many schools have incorporated French and Portuguese as their major languages apart from Hindi and English. English is used for official purposes.

The battle of Diu was fought on the 3rd of February 1509 between the Portuguese and the combined fleet of Mamluk Burji Sultanate of Egypt, the Sultanate of Gujarat and the Zamorin of Kozhikode. The latter fleet took the support of the Ottomans, Republic of the Ragusa and Republic of Venice.

Destinations to Visit in Daman and Diu

Nani Daman is a beautiful place to visit. Tourists can visit many historical monuments like the lighthouse that is that’s constructed in Gothic style. The forts in Daman and Diu are the Nani Daman fort and the Moti Daman fort. The Moti Daman fort houses many official buildings. It was built around 1851 AD and was home to many Portuguese officials and their families. The Nani Daman Fort is built around an area of 12,259 sq. meters and has a huge church called Our Lady of The Sea in it. The entrance features a statue of St. Jerome and two human figures standing alongside.

Have fun in the amusement parks in Daman and Diu are Kadaiya Lake Garden, Daman Ganga tourist complex, Mirasol Water Park and Jetty garden in Nani Daman. These places are perfect for a weekend getaway.

The two popular beaches in the city are the Devka beach and the Jampore beach. Devka beach has a long shoreline and is a delight for the visitors. The Jampore beach lies on the Gujarat border. Swimming is possible here as the beach is quite safe. It is a popular picnic spot in the city.

By Air

Daman and Diu is connected with Mumbai via the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at Mumbai; one can find flights to all the Indian metropolitan cities like Chennai, Kolkata and New Delhi here. The international destinations in South East Asia, Middle East Asia, USA and Europe are connected with India via this airport.

By Trains

The nearest railway station is the Veraval railway station; it directly links Ahmadabad, Rajkot and other cities by rail routes. The Vapi station is connected to Surat, Rajkot, Ahmadabad, Mumbai and Vadodara.

By Road

Roadways connect Daman and Diu with neighboring states and territories. Daman is 193 kilometers from Mumbai and 367 kilometers from Ahmadabad. The cities are small hence you can travel in auto rickshaws, local buses and shared taxis.
