Chikmagalur, literally means the "town of younger daughter", placed amid scenic landscape in a fertile valley, it is surrounded by lush green coffee plantation hills. Historically it is recorded that the Chikmaglur city was presented as a dowry to the younger daughter of the unquestioned and legendary figure Rukmangada, the chief of Sakrepatna. The other part of the town, which was given as dowry to elder daughter of Rukmangada is the Hiremaglur. Some of the inscriptions available in Chikmagalur and Hiremaglur point out to the old names of Kiriya-Magalu and Priya Magalu.
One of the prime attractions in Chikmagalur is the Mullain Giri, which is the highest peak in Karnataka. Mullain Giri is placed at an average height of about 6,300 ft above sea level. The major attractions of Chikmagalur are the Kondadarama Temple, which is a symbolic blend of Hoysala and Dravidian styles of architectures and the Jamia Mosque. Another attraction is St Joseph's Cathedral, renowned for its unique shell shaped portico. The important nearby attractions include 13th century Siddheshwara temple, the grand old cave of Nirvanaswam at Thiruvanahalli and the 17th century Lakshmi Kantha temple.

Travel within city
Chikmagalur is a small town located in the State of Karnataka and it is known for its tea and coffee plantations and its scenic surrounding. The entire town is situated in a hilly region and the roads are steep and difficult to traverse. The town is situated approximately 160 km from the city of Mangalore
and this is also the nearest airport. There are taxi services from Mangalore to Chikmagalur. They cost around Rs 1500 and are the best way to reach for travelers arriving by air. The town of Kadur which is located around 40 km from Chikmagalur is the nearest railway station and many of the hotels in Chikmagalur arrange for pick up services.
The best way to travel around the town is using the public transport buses or by jeep. Due to hilly terrain autos cannot operate frequently. There are buses available from one end of the town to the other and this is the easiest way to travel around the town. They are also cheap.
Jeeps are available for tours to the coffee plantations and since most of these plantations are on steep roads no other vehicles can climb these roads. Cabs are also available through the hotels. They cost around Rs 500 a day excluding driver charges.
