Situated in Sector-10, Government Museum & Art Gallery in Chandigarh is a prominent place that flaunts outstanding collection of miniature paintings, Gandhara period stone sculptures, coins and decorative arts. The artifacts exhibited in this wonderful museum are arranged in separate art galleries in accordance with its antiquity. These galleries are divided into contemporary art gallery, Decorative Arts and Coins, Gandhara and Hindu sculptures and Miniature paintings.
Like all other majestic buildings, this elegant build also is the creative work of the celebrated architect Le Corbusier. The plan is based on gridiron system of beams and columns. The main building consists of a large visiting room, lobby, conservation laboratory, reserve collection storage, temporary exhibition hall, auditorium and cafeteria. Top lighting system provided to the museum is also a noteworthy factor. Pre-historic fossils and other artifacts put on display are really worthy and this is a recommended place of visit. The reference library houses a vast collection of over 6000 odd books on culture and art.
Visiting hours are scheduled between 10 am to 4.30 pm except on Mondays and official holidays during which the museum is closed.
