Chandigarh is an Indian Union Territory, which is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. It is the first planned city in India and is also referred to as ‘The Beautiful City’. Chandigarh derives its name from the ancient temple of Chandi in the city. It has been also hailed as the cleanest city in India.

Haryana was separated from Punjab on the 1st November 1966; hence Chandigarh was made into a union territory and the capital of both the states. The city is located on the foot of the Shivalik range in Himalayas. The districts which surround the state are Roopnagar, Patiala, and Mohali in Punjab and Ambala in the state of Haryana. The city was planned by architects like Pierre Jeanneret, Matthew Nowicki, Albert Mayer and Le Corbusier.

Why Visit Chandigarh

Chandigarh has many tourist destinations which were mostly designed and planned not so long ago. Some of the most popular tourists attractions are -
• The Rock Garden was created by Nek Chand and spans over many acres comprising of hundreds of sculptures in interlinking courtyards.
• The Sukhna Lake is located in the sector 1 and is an artificially made reservoir; there are jogging parks, cafeterias and an amusement park beside it.
• The Rose Garden located in Chandigarh is the largest in Asia.
• The Capitol complex comprises of the Secretariat, High Court and the Assembly. It gives tourists the most amazing experience of the Indian Bureaucracy.
• The Chandigarh Museum gives a look into how the city of Chandigarh was built.
• The Mohali cricket field has played host to numerous cricket matches held in India.
• The Cactus garden has an entire collection of endangered species of Cactus. It was built back in 1987.
• There are two amusement and fun parks in the city viz. Thunderzone and FunCity.

Exploring the Culture of Chandigarh

People in Chandigarh have a modern and urban lifestyle akin to any large metropolis in India. Unlike most regions of India, religious and social taboos are not an integral part of a daily life. The city has a large population of Sikh people; however one can find people from all religions living here.

Food is a delight here as it is generally the Punjabi cuisine. A wide variety of food options are available especially for the non vegetarians. Chola Bhatura and Tandoori Chicken are some of the most popular dishes of the city. Chandigarh is famous for its roadside dhabas. One can find hip and modern restaurants and bars at Sector 17. Alcohol is easily available in many pubs and restaurants.

According to the design of architect, sector 14 was designated as the cultural hub of Chandigarh. The various crafts museums include the main government museum, art gallery, international doll museum, and the museum showing the evolution of life. Some of the exhibits range from the pre historic art to the contemporary art.

Major festivals celebrated in the city are Baisakhi and Teej.

Chandigarh is one of the safest cities in India. The best time to visit the place is during the winters as it is hot during the summers. The use of drugs and narcotic substances is prohibited in the city.
