Chandigarh is a Union Territory located in India. It derives its name from the temple of Goddess Chandi in the city. This city is the capital of both Haryana and Punjab. The city is surrounded the states Punjab and Haryana; cities in Punjab such as Roopnagar, Patiala, Mohali and the Haryanvi city of Ambala envelop the territory. Chandigarh lies on the border of Haryana and Punjab.

This is the first planned city of India and the architects who built it are Pierre Jeanneret, Matthew Nowicki, Albert Mayer and Le Corbusier. It is a good place to visit if you want to break free from your regular Indian life. The city was built in the year 1984.

Destinations to Visit in Chandigarh

The famous Rock Garden is based in the city of Chandigarh. It was built by Nek Chand, who initially took up carving sculptures and clearing rocks at the place. It was later found by the government and was sanctioned to make it into a park. The Sukhna Lake is a great place to unwind and has cafeterias, amusement parks and jogging tracks alongside it.

Tourists can visit the Rose garden in Chandigarh is the largest in entire Asia. The Capitol complex comprises of the Secretariat, High Court and the Assembly. It gives tourists an amazing look of the Indian Bureaucracy. The Pinjore Gardens are located at a distance of nearly 20 kilometers from Chandigarh. It lies on the foot of the Shivalik Ranges and is designed based on the Mughal style.

If you are an art buff, there is a museum and an art gallery located in Sector 10, which houses artifacts dating back to the Harappan Period. The Chandigarh Museum gives a view of how the city of Chandigarh was built. The Mohali cricket field has played host to numerous cricket matches held in India and is a never-miss for cricket lovers. Another interesting spot in Chandigarh is the Cactus Garden, which has an entire collection of endangered species of cactuses. It was built back in 1987.

There are two amusement parks in the city, namely Thunderzone and Fun City. The food in Chandigarh is mainly centered on Punjabi cuisine. The popular dishes here are Cholay Bhaturay and Tandoori Chicken. You can find amazing food, in places ranging from Dhabas to popular hip restaurants.

By Road

Buses under the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking connect the city to the neighboring states. The two local bus terminals are at Sector 17 and 43. Each bus ticket has has a map showing all the bus routes in Chandigarh behind it.
