Bhimashankar is a spiritual place with dense forest. One has to go via Manghar to reach Bhimashankar. A visit for one day to this beautiful place of natural beauty and lovely scenery makes one refreshed and healthy.

Bhimashankar is a good place for nature lovers and trekkers. Different variety of birds can also be seen at this place. A fantastic temple of Lord Shiva can also be visited. Bhimashankar is enwrapped in the congregations of the majestic western ghats. It is said that the idol is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India.

Bhimashankar got its name from the river Bhima. Legend has it that Lord Shankara got angry and killed Rakshas Tripurasura. The heat generated from the war caused the river Bhima to evaporate. Thus the name, Bhimashankar, originated.

This place is at a height of 3250 feet. The nearest station from which buses ply is Karjat. Enroute one can be embraced by Ganesh Ghat or Shidi Ghat. Both the ways are a bit tough but at the same time enjoyable. If the dense forest route is taken, then you have to travel for 4 hours to reach to the top.

The forests of Bhimashankar spread across an area of more than 1000 m. It gives a look of a high covering of thick green rainforests. All the trees of the forest are more than 60 feet tall. According to mythology these forests were once trekked by the Pandavas of the Indian epic Mahabharata.

Ravi Shanlkar Kalita As per the Shiv Purana, the "Bheema Shankara" temple is situated over a hillock near Guwahati,Assam.
The one being discussed here is not the original one....its a structure only 200 years old. If one has to go by the truth, this so called Bheema Shankara is just a fake one.

amol Dear Ravi, i think u need to get your facts right before making such an irresponsible statement. Bhimashanker is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga's described in numerous historic texts. is the Bheema Shankar that you describe one of the Jyotirlingas??

Nilesh right Viraj...one should not make statments as Ravi has made without going deep into the subject. It just show the mentality of the person. Also calling something a fake is a big statement to make and should be made with some explanation and proof...
