Believed to be as old as 2000 years, Bandhavgarh Fort is an ancient fort in Bandhavgarh. It has been under the control of many dynasties who ruled the kingdom in which Bandhavgarh was a part. Maghas dynasties in the first century to Kings of Rewa controlled the fort during its history covering 20 centuries.
The legends claim that the fort was built by Lord Rama during his short stay in Bandhavgarh while returning from Lanka after defeating Ravana. It is believed that Lord Rama asked his brother Lakshman to take control of the fort and watch the movements in Lanka. The city got the name from this story.
There is a temple, dating back to the fort’s existence, dedicated to Lakshmana (Bandhavdish). The fort and temple are in ruins, but still is a marvelous site for the tourists looking for the historical evidences and archaeological findings.

Bandhavgarh hill is the highest hill in the reserve of Bandhavgarh with an altitude of 807 meters above the sea level. A group of many small hills, 32 in numbers, surround this hill. These small hills together with Bandhavgarh hill forms a number of low lying plains and valleys. The hill is formed by the sandstones and the water permeates from these hills are the sources of many streams and springs in the region.
The hill is the specimen of picturesque natural beauty and the cool climate over the hilly terrains make it a hill station for the enthusiast tourists. The top of the hill is flat and some portions are marshy land as well. The green vegetation is dense in the downhill and as it goes up from the downhill, the flora reduces.
The hilly regions are natural habitat of many plants and animals. Few exceptional plant species are found in these regions. From the hilltop, one can view the panoramic views of the picturesque down valleys and plains.

Main attraction in the Bandhavgarh is Bandhavgarh National Park. This is a thriving national park with rich flora and fauna in an area of 450 sq km. The park with hilly terrains of sandstones and rocks is covered with marshy lands and meadows of dense forests. This National Park is a home to many varieties of animals including tigers, Indian bison, sambars, langurs and chitals. This wildlife sanctuary is having the highest population of tigers in India.
The National Park is surrounded by dense green trees and contains number of caves enclosing ancient shrines. These ancient caves are worthy of visiting and are adorned with ancient Sanskrit inscriptions.
This Park is a best place for bird watching as well. During winters many migratory birds can be spotted here. Some rare species of reptiles are also found in this park. The climate of this exquisite park is very cool and ambience is very pleasant. The Park can be viewed thorough in an elephant safari.
