Overview   |   When to go   |   How to reach

With two renowned tourist attractions, namely Bandhavgarh Fort and Bandhavgarh National Park, Bandhavgarh has got its prominence in the tourist map of India. It is one of the important cities in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh State in India. This famous picnic spot lies between the eastern region of Satpura ranges and the Vindhyan hilly regions.

The name Bandhavgarh means Brother’s fort (Bandhav means Brother and Garh means Fort). This name is derived out of an epic story of Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana.

The forest surrounding Bandhavgarh was the hunting destination for the Maharajas of Rewa. This was known as Shikargarh (game reserve forest) of the Maharaja’s family. It was said that King of Rewa hunted 109 tigers from this forest during their rule.

Son River and Johilla River flow on the eastern side of Bandhavgarh and Umrar River flows through the western regions. These rivers make the plain and hilly areas of Bandhavgarh a fertile land providing all support for natural vegetation.

Bandhavgarh is the natural habitat of many wild life animals, with the main attraction being royal tigers. This mostly unexplored and unspoiled region without the invasion of poachers and hunters still remain as a haven for birds and animals. The forest area in Badhvagarh is enriched with many deciduous forests and thriving with lusting greeneries. Dense green forests and grasslands make the place a paradise for varieties of birds, large herbivores and different species of insects. Many anthropologists visit this place to catalogue the host of insect species live in this forests.

The undulated hilly regions, mesmerizing natural beauty and pristine environment make this place a much sought tourist attraction in Madhya Pradesh. The Bandhavgarh town is now modernized with many new buildings and resorts. The soft cool breeze from the surrounding hills and calm ambience attracts many tourists to Bandhavgarh. This is a nice place for those tourists who are enthused with eco-tourism.
