Central Assam

The most important city in this part of Assam is Guwahati, a famous tourist spot for those who seek so spend some time among the best of nature. Guwahati serves as a perfect gateway for excursions to the various other less explored hill stations. Assam State Museum in the Dighalipukhuri district of Guwahati is a must visit attraction. Highlighting antiques that goes back to the pre historic times, this museum also boasts if authentic paintings in ivory and metal and historical wooden artifacts. Some of the major temple attractions here are Kamakhaya Temple, Bhubaneshwari Temple, Shiva Temple, nawagrah Temple and Vashistha Temple. An important draw among the tourist here is the Guwahati Zoo, which qualifies to be the largest natural zoo in the country.

Located at a distance of 24 kms from Guwahati is the heritage town of Hajo, which is a famous religious site for Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims. Often described as a place of exemplary communal harmony, the town has various ancient temples and the Poa Mecca mosque.
