Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a collection of more than 600 Islands located in Bay of Bengal. They have been declared as a Union Territory in India, but are geographically closer to Thailand and Myanmar. Port Blair is its capital city and the languages spoken widely are the Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Bengali.

The two major ethnicities present in the Islands are the “Natives” and the “Indians”. The natives are divides into two groups viz. the Negroids and the Mongoloids. The Negroids live on the Andaman Islands and the Mongoloids live on the Nicobar Islands. The Indians are the immigrants from Paschim Banga, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. The major cities in Andaman and Nicobar Islands are Diglipur, Port Blair, Mayabunder and Rangat.

Destinations to Visit

Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a collection of more than 600 Islands, hence making it a very thriving and viable tourist destination.
• The Havelock Island is one of the most beautiful Islands and provides adventure sports enthusiasts with activities like scuba diving and snorkeling.
• Port Blair and Diglipur are the two frequently visited places and are popular for their seafood and scenic beauty.
• Rutland Island is a very clean and pristine Island. It is home to a huge mangrove covering over 274 sq. kilometers.
• Neil Island is a relatively quieter Island which has scenic beaches and many other water sports opportunities.
• Wandoor is a place to relax and enjoy the serenity and beauty of nature. The place is home to Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park and has one of the largest resorts in the Union Territory called the Sea Princess Resort.
• Barren Island is the only place in India, which has a volcano.
• Long Island is the place-to-be for people who love camping. One can experience the Robinson Crusoe life here as there is nothing readily available here. Tents and food need to be previously arranged.
• Bartang Island is home to limestone caves, mud volcano, mangrove creeks and backwaters. • Little Andaman used to be a famous place for surfing, before being destroyed by the Tsunami in the year 2004.
• Other places to visit are the Cellular Jail and the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve. Many birds visit the place, making it a hub for bird watchers.

How to Reach

By Air

The Vir Savarkar Airport has flights to the metropolitan cities of Kolkata, Chennai and Delhi. International tourists can avail the Chennai International Airport, which connects major destinations across Europe, US, South East Asia, China and the Middle East Asia. One can also find helicopter services to some of the islands from Port Blair

By Water

It generally takes four days in a ship to reach Andaman and Nicobar Islands from Chennai, Kolkata or Vishakhapatnam.

By Road

You can travel within Andaman and Nicobar Islands by buses and taxis. Buses connect Port Blair to Rangat, Diglipur and Bartang Island taking a time of six hours, eight hours and three hours respectively. The road to Rangat is a little bumpy.
