Ananthapur is a city in the Ananthapur district in Andhra Pradesh. Known for its tourist attraction, the town enjoys a legacy of colonial history. It is also famous for its many universities. Some of the main Universities in the city are Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and Satya Sai University. In the Second World War Ananthapur was an important place for the British Indian army. JNTU was a bunker for the army and its ruins can still be seen today.
Ananthapur has many temples in its surrounding areas. Some of them are the Pampanuru shrine, Sri Rama Swamy temple, Hanuman temple, Temple of Lord Shiva and Parvathi, ISKCON temple in the outskirts of the city, the Devarakonda hill temple , Sri Sringeri Sankar Matt and the Venketeshwara Swamy temple.
Other places include the clock tower which was built during independence, Bellum caves and the Buttre Pally waterfall.
Ananthapur is connected to most of the major cities by the NH 7 and 205. It has regular train services to Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and New Delhi.
